There are many different kinds of illustrative styles, some cartoonish, some more abstract, some more detailed.
But how do the really great designers do it? Here's the secret

Readers Digest recently updated their logo. I am not too sure what to think of it yet. It just seems like the old logo was so instantly recognizable. Here are a few of the changes that I noticed when I first saw the new logo.

In this star-studded episode, Paul dives in to originality in logo design. Often times
it is very easy to think you are being creative and original if you just
sit down and create something from scratch. Problem is, often times
we are influenced by things we have already seen and are just too lazy to research in an attempt to avoid plagiarism.

Trying to find a graphic design company is similar to buying a car; you need to know what to look for before you step onto the lot. We have provided a checklist of the most basic elements to selecting a design firm, and much like purchasing a new vehicle, knowing a little can save you a lot in the end.

This week, Paul takes us on a harrowing journey into 2 of the cardinal sins of logo design...
1. Too much clutter.
2. Illegibility.
The quickest way to lose a customer's attention...

I have a logo story to share from my glory days, long before I had any understanding of good design or how to recognize it. Ready? Here goes.
When I was in high school, my lovely principal decided to give our school a little makeover, complete with a new logo. I was the student representative appointed to the committee that approved the design, and I was really disgusted at the ideas that were brought to us.

Just a quick note, we would like to congratulate our friends at Logoworks on their new merger with Fortune 14 company Hewlett-Packard.

The latest in the Logo Design podcast series, deals with inspiration from quite possibly the best movie created to date...Frank Miller's '300'.

Ahh, opening day of baseball season. So full of new fields, new managers (Bochy! How could you betray me!), new players, and new logos?
The Arizona Diamondbacks will be unveiling more than the return of Johnson next week, as they take the field in Sedona Red and black as opposed to the usual teal and purple.

Making the graphics and text in your logo designs match is not easy to do, but knowing how to do it can be the difference between a timeless, wonderful design and an awkward mark that doesn't sit well or make a lasting impression.

By now almost everyone has heard this new tagline: "Cingular is now the new AT&T." But apparently NASCAR is not listening. Word is out today that the telecom giant is suing NASCAR for not allowing it to change Jeff Burton's Cingular-branded race car with new AT&T branding. (If these phone companies would stop merging things would be a lot less messy, but I digress.)

Are you wondering what an ambigram is and what that has to do with you? Then listen to our latest podcast, where Paul explains what ambigrams are and how to make one (it's harder than you think).

In this latest episode, Paul Browning continues his in-depth analysis of logo design by discussing logotypes, which consist of minimal graphics, and maximum font...

This is bizarre. I'm reading today that Brussels Airlines is changing their logo because superstitious passengers have been complaining that the logo is unlucky. The current logo is a series of 13 dots that form a lower case "b", but now the airlines has altered the design by adding an additional dot to the logo, now totaling fourteen. Apparently this is a much safer and luckier number.

In this episode, Paul Browning takes us through the process of developing the concept in a client's creative brief into an initial composition...This is a neat inside peak into how a graphic designer actually comes up with a logo design concept.

People seemed to like the first podcast we produced, so Paul was gracious enough to divulge more of his design know how in this second podcast where he discusses illustrative logos. Follow the images below to see what he's talking about (or view the slide show if you listen to it through iTunes).

Like them or not, the Bears and the Colts are two NFL teams that have a lot of history. And one thing that these two teams have in common is their rich tradition and lasting loyalty. Not to mention they both have great logos. Both the Bears' and the Colts' logos are tried and true. They have passed the test of time, not needing a major overhaul to still look great--a true indicator of lasting, good design (Think Ford, GE, Coca-Cola; their logos have hardly changed in a hundred years). Here's a bit of history on each team's logo.

Last week, on Zompist.com, I came across what may be the most poorly designed packaging I've seen for quite some time. This is a perfect example of what not to do. Where do I begin to discuss the problems with this hideous design?

Two months ago we unveiled the NFL's Top Ten logos as judged by our panel of expert designers, and since the response was so positive, we decided to do the same with the NBA's team logos.

Many people are surprised to hear that when Caroline Davidsion designed the Nike swoosh in 1971, the fledgling shoe company paid her just $35. But it might similarly be surprising to read that the man who designed the 2008 Olympic logo was paid just pennies by the Chinese Government.

The Colonel has undergone a makeover (see his new apron?), and to promote the new logo, KFC has crafted a gigantic logo that is visible from space near Rachel, Nevada. You can see video of workers creating the huge logo from what looks like foam or plastic squares here.

The results are in! A few weeks ago a panel of 25 expert designers ranked the NFL's team logos best to worst. We've shown you the best, and now you can see the worst.

Do you think you know what the Google logo looks like? How about Amazon? Flickr? Now you can find out for sure by taking a neat little quiz at GuessTheLogo.com. The quiz takes the same basic logo and changes just one or two things about it, making for a difficult quiz, actually. On my first try, I only scored in the 27th percentile out of everyone who had taken it.

Last July, the European Union launched a logo design contest for their 50th anniversary, an event that inspired more than 1,700 entries from design professionals and students from around Europe. Recently, the EU announced the winner of the contest: Szymon Skrzypczak, a 23-year-old design student from Poland.

Forget winning streaks, MVPs and playoff hopes. When it comes to the NFL, all we at logodesign.com care about is which team has the best logo. And to find out, we polled 25 expert designers, who ranked each of the NFL's team logos best to worst. The designers said the Denver Broncos have the best logo design, followed by the New England Patriots and Houston Texans. You can see the rest of the Top 10 List here.

Think these logos look an awfully lot alike? Both use green, both are circular, both use the words "Star" and "Coffee", both have stars and both have mythical-style illustrations in the center. And of course, both are logos for stores that sell coffee.

Recently, I wrote about a company that will put your logo on postage stamps. And this morning I came accross another interesting concept in the October issue of Inc Magazine that says Mars, Inc, maker of M&Ms, will now print your company logo on the much-loved "melt in your mouth, not in your hand" candies.

Fujifilm yesterday adopted an updated logo that will replace the one developed in 1980 and used for the past 26 years. The 72-year-old film giant announced the much-needed new logo back in July, but officially began using the mark October 1.

The Internet has changed the way graphic design is done, especially for small businesses. There are many affordable solutions available online for SMB's and other organizations who are on a tight budget but still need a professional image. Now there are even places where you can get a free logo design. Here's a quick review of three of these services.

In celebration of their 35th anniversary, Starbucks announced they're bringing back their original logo: a topless mermaid with fins spread apart. The Seattle-based coffee giant will put the logo on cups in its Washington and Oregon stores.

The UK's Hackney Council has won an out of court settlement against Nike for unauthorized use of their logo, which Nike used on a variety of sports clothes sold as far away as Japan and the Philippines. The sportswear giant apologized and has agreed to pay the council more than $560,000 and cover the legal costs of the lawsuit, according to an article on Out-Law.com.

NASA has officially unveiled the logo for its next generation exploration vehicle, Orion. Perhaps the most interesting part of the unveiling: It was designed by Michael Okuda, best known for his work designing the alien languages and computer displays on the Star Trek Enterprise.

Logoworks' billboard campaign - "Your Logo Stinks" - went awry when unknown vandals spray painted the billboard so it read: Your Log Stinks! right next to the image of an old man turning up his nose. Hundreds of commuters saw the altered billboard, which appeared along I-15 in Salt Lake City, prompting unexpected attention and publicity. The billboard was even talked about on SLC's local alternative radio station, 101.9 The End. -
